CRA Hot Rod Camp #1 … A “Hugh” Success!!!
June 2006
What a week it was!! CRA’s 1st Hot Rod Camp—I still can’t explain it, and I’m not going to try to. You just had to be there!!! God’s favor was all over this camp and He allowed us to do more than we could ask or imagine. We are so thankful to those of you who prayed and gave us a covering of protection. Without that covering, who knows what would have transpired. To those of you that gave financially, and those who gave parts, thank you! Your generosity was felt and still is being felt multiplied in the lives of four young men. To those of you directly involved in the camp, I cannot express enough the deep love I have for you! You gave it your all—some nights with less than 2 hours sleep. Your example of ‘Christian men working as a team set a new standard for all of us.
To our four young men: Phillip, William, Josh, and Brian—our lives will never be the same because of you! Your lives will never be the same because you saw Jesus in the lives of Gary, Jim, Roger, Bernard, and Cole helping you build the ’53. What a team! It’s no wonder at the end of the week we looked at each other and said—“I wish it didn’t have to end.”! As we each went our way we realized we had spent a week in our lives that could never be duplicated. It can only be remembered as the week Jesus showed up and walked with us on water. It was truly a miracle!!
To those who are following CRA Hot Rod Camps, Int'l from a distance here are the details:
- Four young men worked shoulder to shoulder with 6 older men to complete a
- ’53 Ford truck in 1 week
- Morning devotions were at 6 AM
- Evening shop talks were at 7 PM for 1 hour, (although Friday night it went for 3 hours!)
- Five CRA wives burned the candle at both ends to provide us with more foodthan we could eat, (and believe me those young guys can eat!!)
Many hours were spent in advance to finish the truck in one week, but on 1PM Saturday the truck was driven on the trailer and brought to our home for the family potluck. It was missing a front bumper, windshield wipers, rear roll pan, dash knobs, and 2 Baby Moon hubcaps. That’s not bad for starting with the frame & chassis Monday morning.
In closing, special thanks to Gary Snyder and Snyder Auto Body in Monmouth, IL. You are “The Man”! You set the pace for the rest of us! Jim Lenz and Midway Auto in Galesburg, IL--you made parts fit that would drive engineers nuts!! Roger Bennington of Metamora, IL—your sense of humor got us through those really tough days when we wondered if we could make it! Bernard Brown of Kirkwood, IL—every team needs a behind the scenes, roll up your sleeves, go to work guy. Maybe next time it will be a Ford motor!!! Cole Unger—of Sacramento, CA—Cole, what can we say? Only you could bring that spark of excitement and be a team player. At the end we felt like we had known you for all our lives! Thanks to Gordon Dudley for procuring the truck for CRA. Last, but not least, thank you to Gordon Dudley for procuring the truck AND Bruce & Evelyn Peyton of Long Beach, CA for donating their ’53 truck. They have planted good seed in good soil that will continue to produce a large harvest. There will be many more camps, but this ’53 will always be CRA’s 1st Hot Rod Camp truck. Because of you we are all blessed!!
Already plans are being made for next year’s camps. But mark it down; make it plain for all to see. For ONE week in June of 2006, lives were changed forever!!
